Prayer

Let us bow our heads in prayer and pray for guidance and strength.

Eternal God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, grant us Your Holy Spirit who writes the preached word into our hearts so that we may receive and believe it, and be gladdened and comforted by it in eternity. Glorify Your Word in our hearts. Make it so bright and warm that we may find pleasure in it, and through Your inspiration think what is right. By Your power fulfill the Word, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen.

Martin Luther

Show me Thy ways, O Lord; teach me Thy paths. Lead me in Thy truth, and teach me: for Thou art the God of my salvation; on Thee do I wait all the day long.

Psalm 25:4,5 - KJV

Topic - Who is GOD - Names for GOD

Oh give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples. Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; Speak of all His wonders. Glory in His holy name; Let the heart of those who seek the LORD be glad. (Psalm 105:1-3 - NASB)

And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. (Joel 2:32, Acts 2:21, Romans 10:13 - ESV)

The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe. (Proverbs 18:10 - NASB)

There are many names attributed to GOD in the Bible. The following are the most common names used.

Names for GOD:

LORD - (Hbr. YHWH - YAHWEH or Jehovah, which is derived from the verb HAYAH, to be; meaning, "God is," or "God will be") Personal name of GOD revealed to Moses (Exodus 3:13-14 - I AM that I AM - Hbr. Ehyeh-Asher-Ehyeh). It is used more than 6,820 times and most english translations of the Bible render the name as LORD (all capitol letters). The original pronunciation is lost because the Hebrews were afraid to speak it for fear of using GOD's name in vain. Instead, Jewish writers used the euphemism "The Lord" (Hbr. Adonai) and early Christians used this as well. "Yah" is used sometimes as an abreviated form by itself but most often as a syllable in other names and terms. (e.g., Jerem'iah', Isa'iah', Hallelu'iah', etc.). - Ref. TLSB p. 1227.

Lord - (Hbr. Adonai - OT, Grk. Kyrios - NT) Jews and early Christians used this term instead of the formal (personal) name of GOD for fear of using GOD's name in vain (also used as a generic term for GOD). It is used c. 340 times in the Old Testament and thousands of times in the New Testament. Most english translations of the Bible render this name as Lord (not all capitol letters). In the New Testament "Lord" is sometimes used to refer to a master or person of authority. Ref. TLSB p. 1227, 2098.

God - (Hbr. Elohim - OT, Grk. Theos - NT) A general term for GOD (or gods). In the Old Testament there are three different variations: (1) - "Elohim" is used c. 2550 times in the Old Testament. References to the One True GOD always take singular verbs, even though Elohim is a plural noun (may relate to GOD's unique trinitarian character). Occasionally Elohim is used of men such as judges (Exodus 4:16; Psalm 82:6). (2) - "El" is used c. 400 times in the Old Testament. It is an ancient word for God(s) appearing in every semetic language except Ethiopic. Job uses "El" more often than any other reference to GOD. "El" is a common syllable in names (e.g., Micha'el', Gabri'el', Jo'el', etc.). (3) - "Eloah" is used c. 400 times in the Old Testament. It is similar in spelling to the Aram word for God. It is usually associated with GOD's ability to defend His people. In the New Testament translations "God" is used to describe the One True GOD as well as pagan dieties. Ref. TLSB p. 1227, 2098.

LORD God - (Hbr. YHWH Elohim)

LORD of Hosts - (Hbr. YHWH Tzevaot)

LORD Almighty - (Hbr. YHWH Sabaoth)

God Almighty - (Hbr. El Shaddai)

God Most High - (Hbr. El Elyon)

Mighty One - (Hbr. Abbir)

God views your relationship with Him as permanent. Referring to all those who believe in Him, Jesus Christ said of us, "I know them, and they follow me; and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand (John 10:27-30)."
